Cross Your Heart, Hope to Dye
Join us Friday, February 7th at 5pm for @roco137 #firstfridayroc at The Op Shop!
This month we are featuring hand-dyed and silk-painted garments by local artist and vintage reseller Chelsey Haines of @upintheairvtg and Portland, Maine artist @halezcomet.
In their mission to reclaim, revive, and resist buying new, Chelsey and Haley use traditional dyeing techniques on vintage clothing.
The title refers to both the act of making and the unpredictable nature of dyeing. “Cross your heart” symbolizes the truth and intention behind the creative process, while “hope to dye” plays on the uncertainty of how pigments will take to fabric.
The exhibition reflects the acceptance of chance and process that all creators experience, turning worn garments into a canvas of both challenges and triumphs.
